Ornamental Milling

Example - PergolaOrnamental milling can add elegant details to your woodworking projects both in the traditional areas of woodworking and also in the garden (see Arbour). In the past designs such as fluting, reeding, rope moulding and barley twist were traditionally hand carved, turned on a lathe, or latterly milled on expensive CNC milling machines.

This form of woodworking is now, thanks to Legacy Woodworking Machinery, within the reach of every woodworker using a 1/2" router with the appropriate router bits and a Legacy Ornamental Mill.

All of the non-craft machines have the following capabilities : -

Indexing or Dividing

  • Create reeds and flutes, or multiple sides.

  • Surface material and add tenons at exactly 90 degrees to receive rails and stiles.
Turning/Lathe work

  • Create beads and coves on round, square, or multiple sides.

  • Use patterns, like a copy lathe, or use the router bit profile to create the details you like.
Tapering

  • Adjust the bed to mill either straight or tapered pieces on flat stock or between centres.
Spiralling

  • Mill rope mouldings and columns up to 11" diameter.

  • Mill hollow spirals and barley twist designs.

  • Mill diamond or pineapple patterns. Straight, tapered or curved.
Joinery

  • Mortises & tenons for tables, beds, etc.

  • Dadoes & pocket holes for bookcases, cabinets, headboards, etc.
Template or Pattern Follower

  • Use a pattern to create curved profiles such as cabriolet or Queen Anne style furniture.
Flat Stock Milling

  • Plane material smooth to remove cupping and bowing, eliminate tear out and snipe.

  • Add decorative details or construction details such as dadoes, rabbit joints or finger joints.
Rotary Table (accessory)

  • Create round table tops, arches, platters and rosettes.

These features allow the operative, especially those with an artistic imagination, the freedom and versatility to add elegant details to their woodworking projects through the use of such detail as reeds & flutes, tapers, spirals, turned beads & coves, rosettes, contoured profiles and with the added ability to do mortise & tenons and surface planning.
